The Cheng brothers (Cheng Hao, Cheng Yi程顥,程頤) and Zhu Xi, leading Neo Confucian thinkers of the Song dynasty, regarded cultivating virtue as the core spiritual praxis on the path to sagehood. Cheng Yi formulated the maxim "Cultivation requires reverence; learning lies in the extension of knowledge" as the guiding principle for pursuing sagehood. Zhu Xi further integrated the doctrine of "maintaining reverence and probing principle to the utmost" across the entire Eight Step framework of The Great Learning: the investigation of things, extension of knowledge, sincerity of the will, rectification of the mind, cultivation of the self, regulation of the family, governance of the state, and bringing of peace to the world. Oriented toward the ultimate goal of "learning to become a sage," virtue cultivation is neither isolated inner quiet sitting nor purely external behavioral restraint, but a progressive process in which rational cognition and sociopolitical practice mutually penetrate. It serves as the subjective precondition for investigating things and fathoming principle, the concrete foothold for sincerity of will and rectification of mind, the fundamental orientation of self-cultivation and "inner sagehood," and the ontological basis for pacifying others and "outer kingship." Through their Neo Confucian reconstruction of the Eight Steps, the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi anchored virtue cultivation as the underlying spiritual practice for transforming one's physical endowment, ascending from mundane daily practice to profound spiritual realization, and ultimately attaining "unity with the Heavenly Principle." They also recast the traditional Confucian ideal of "bringing peace to the world" into a set of public governance norms rooted in moral edification, mediated by the Confucian reciprocity principle of "the way of the measuring square." This paper systematically expounds the internal logic of this ideological system, clarifying the substantive connotation, internal hierarchy, and practical path of virtue cultivation in the ChengZhu Neo Confucian doctrinal system.

1. Conceptual Definition of cultivating virtue and the Framework of cultivating virtue for Learning to Become a Sage
As the core of their sagehood theory, the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi constructed a complete logical framework for virtue cultivation, with a clear definition of core concepts and a gradual progression from moral cognition to social practice. This framework takes "learning to become a sage" as the ultimate goal, The Great Learning's Eight Steps as the basic practical sequence, and the unity of "reverence" and "principle" as the methodological core.
1.1 The Cheng Brothers' and Zhu Xi's Views on "Cultivating Virtue"
The Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi defined the essence of cultivating virtue as "preserving the Heavenly Principle and suppressing human desires." Through sincere inner reverence and daily moral habituation, this practice aims to maintain and expand the innate perfect good nature in the human heart, rectifying the biased and degenerate temperament caused by the partiality of one's physical endowment and the obscuration of material desires. In their theoretical system, "virtue" is the concrete manifestation of the Heavenly Principle—the universal moral law governing the universe—in the individual. Cheng Yi explicitly proposed the thesis: "Human nature is principle" (Er Cheng Yishu二程遺書). Human nature is originally good, inherently endowed with the four virtues of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, and wisdom; however, this moral core is easily obscured by selfish thoughts and sensory desires, making it difficult to manifest naturally as conduct in line with the Heavenly Principle. "Cultivation" thus takes "maintaining reverence" as the fundamental starting point: one must constantly gather body and mind upon the Heavenly Principle, fend off the interference of selfish desires, and allow the innate good nature to gradually emerge and accumulate, ultimately realizing the state where "sincerity within is manifested without."
Cheng Yi regarded "reverence" as the core methodological lever for virtue cultivation, putting forward the famous slogan: "Cultivation requires reverence; learning lies in the extension of knowledge." "Reverence" does not refer to mere outward courteous demeanor, but to an inner spiritual state of "abiding in oneness without distraction." That is, the mind always adheres to the Heavenly Principle, neither clinging to external objects nor deviating from the correct moral path. It is a kind of inner vigilance and self-restraint: neither the "empty quietude" of Buddhism, which advocates closing the eyes in meditation to isolate oneself from the world, nor a rigid, formalistic self-suppression. Rather, it consists in maintaining focus and solemnity in every thought and in all daily affairs. Only by upholding reverence can selfish desires be deprived of any opening to invade the inner mind, and the innate good nature be naturally preserved and expanded.
Zhu Xi further developed this theory, organically uniting "cultivation" and "probing principle to the utmost" as the "two wheels" or "two wings" of moral advancement. He emphasized: "Maintaining reverence and probing principle to the utmost are mutually reinforcing. To exhaust principle, one needs reverence as a foundation; to preserve reverence, one needs the clarity of principle" (Daxue Zhangju大學章句). Inner reverence keeps selfish desires at bay, creating the subjective condition for the rational exploration of moral principles; conversely, a thorough understanding of moral principles consolidates the foundation of reverence, making inner cultivation more focused and persistent. Zhu Xi particularly stressed the pervasiveness of reverence: from the initial stage of investigating things and extending knowledge to the final stage of bringing peace to the world, neither inner spiritual cultivation nor external social action can depart from the practice of reverence. He noted: "Reverence is a thoroughgoing practice, permeating every stage from investigating things and extending knowledge to governing the state and bringing peace to the world." Virtue cultivation is thus not a task confined to a single stage, but a continuous thread running through the entire Eight Step process, connecting the mundane and the sacred, inner cultivation and external action.
1.2 "Learning to Become a Sage": The Teleological Orientation of Cultivating Virtue
The Cheng brothers broke with the long held traditional view that "sages are born with superior endowments," asserting that "any person can become a sage, and the gentleman's learning must reach sagehood before it stops. To stop before reaching sagehood is to abandon oneself" (Er Cheng Yishu, juan 25《二程遺書》卷二十五). A sage is not an unapproachable divine being, but the highest moral personality that ordinary people can attain through sustained virtue cultivation. Aspiring learners must take sagehood as the ultimate pursuit, rather than settling for partial achievements.
The essential difference between a sage and an ordinary person lies not in innate talent or endowment, but in whether virtue cultivation has reached its pinnacle—whether one has fully preserved the innate good nature, completely eliminated the bondage of selfish desires, and brought every word and deed into conformity with the Heavenly Principle. In his Essay on What Yan Hui Loved to Learn, Cheng Yi clearly defined the ideal of "learning to become a sage," taking sustained virtue cultivation as the only path to sagehood. Zhu Xi subsequently refined this teleological logic, proposing that sagehood consists in "returning to one's original nature" (Daxue Zhangju大學章句). Through postnatal virtue cultivation, one recovers the perfect good nature endowed by Heaven, and the process of this recovery is precisely the gradual advancement of virtue cultivation. For the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi, "learning to become a sage" is not an empty slogan, but the concrete directional guide for all virtue cultivation: every improvement in virtue brings one closer to the realm of sagehood; the ultimate realm of sagehood is inevitably the natural outcome of virtue cultivation perfected to the highest degree.
1.3 The Eight Steps of The Great Learning: The Progressive Praxis of Cultivating Virtue
To transform abstract virtue cultivation into a set of operable, verifiable moral practices, the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi took The Great Learning's Eight Steps as the standard progressive sequence. This framework—the investigation of things, extension of knowledge, sincerity of the will, rectification of the mind, cultivation of the self, regulation of the family, governance of the state, and bringing of peace to the world—constitutes a complete logical chain, advancing from external cognitive exploration to inner spiritual cultivation, then to family social practice and finally to public state governance, realizing the unity of knowledge and action, inner cultivation and external application.
Zhu Xi further divided the Eight Steps into two interconnected tiers in his Commentary on the Great Learning: the first four steps—investigation of things, extension of knowledge, sincerity of the will, and rectification of the mind—belong to the "inner sagehood" practice of "manifesting the luminous virtue," which focuses on eliminating the obscuration of selfish desires and awakening the innate good nature through inner cultivation; the last three steps—regulation of the family, governance of the state, and bringing of peace to the world—belong to the "outer kingship" practice of "renewing the people," which requires extending one's own virtue to others, influencing and edifying the public to achieve universal moral improvement. The fifth step, cultivation of the self, serves as the critical pivot connecting inner sagehood and outer kingship: the previous four steps lay an inner foundation for personal cultivation, while the subsequent three steps are its natural extension and external verification.
Although the Eight Steps are divided into stages, they are not mechanically isolated. Virtue cultivation acts as the core thread linking all of them: investigation of things and extension of knowledge provide the cognitive premise; sincerity of the will and rectification of the mind realize the internal landing; cultivation of the self completes the transformation of virtue from inner consciousness to external daily conduct; regulation of the family, governance of the state, and bringing of peace to the world extend virtue from the individual to the family, state, and ultimately the entire world. With this logical reconstruction, the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi transformed the sagehood path from a transcendent ideal dependent on innate talent into an actionable, progressive practical system accessible to every ordinary person.
2. Investigation of Things and Extension of Knowledge: The Cognitive Foundation and Starting Point of Cultivating Virtue
In the Cheng Zhu Neo Confucian system, the Eight Steps begin with investigation of things and extension of knowledge, regarded as the cognitive foundation and starting point of virtue cultivation. Moral cultivation must be grounded in a rational cognition of moral principles; without such cognition, virtue cultivation becomes a blind, aimless formal practice.
2.1 The Moral Cognitive Essence of Investigation of Things and Extension of Knowledge
The Cheng brothers' and Zhu Xi's interpretation of investigation of things and extension of knowledge marks a fundamental departure from the commentaries of earlier Confucian learners: they elevated this original cognitive method in The Great Learning into a moral cognitive practice aimed at exploring the Heavenly Principle and clarifying human moral nature. Cheng Yi redefined the meaning of "investigation": he interpreted ge (格) as "to arrive at," in the sense of "reaching the essence of things" (Er Cheng Yishu). He further emphasized: "Every single thing contains its own principle, and one must exhaustively explore its principle." For the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi, "things" are not limited to natural objects, but more broadly cover human relations, daily affairs, and all social behaviors—the very reason investigation of things can connect with virtue cultivation. The so-called "principle" of things is ultimately the concrete manifestation of the universal moral law in specific human affairs.
Cheng Yi believed there are many ways to explore principle: reading classical texts to delve into the meaning of the sages' ideas, evaluating the rights and wrongs of historical figures and events, or handling daily affairs to discern the most appropriate moral norms. Zhu Xi carried this view forward, proposing the famous doctrine of "investigating thing after thing to exhaust its principle" (Daxue Zhangju). He stressed that the exploration of principle cannot be separated from concrete affairs to engage in empty speculation; one must start from real life and explore the moral principle contained in each specific thing. The purpose of this cognitive practice is not to acquire instrumental natural knowledge, but to understand the universal moral principle rooted in human nature: by exploring the principle of serving one's parents, one clarifies the moral norm of filial piety; by exploring the principle of serving one's ruler, one clarifies the moral norm of loyalty; by exploring the principle of interacting with friends, one clarifies the moral norm of trustworthiness. The principles of all things are ultimately rooted in the innate good nature of the human heart, and the ultimate goal of investigating things and extending knowledge is to confirm and expand this innate good nature through the cognition of external things.
Investigation of things and extension of knowledge are thus the necessary preconditions for virtue cultivation. Without first clarifying the substantive connotation of moral principles through rational cognition, virtue cultivation would be reduced to blind subjective attachment, or even deviate from the correct moral path and fall into heterodox practices.
2.2 Cultivation Requires Reverence: The Subjective Precondition for Investigation of Things
Investigation of things and extension of knowledge, and virtue cultivation, are not in a linear, sequential relationship, but are interdependent and mutually reinforcing. Virtue cultivation is the subjective guarantee for the effectiveness of investigating things and extending knowledge: without the spiritual foundation of reverence, the cognitive process will be distracted by external material desires or biased subjective views, making a true understanding of moral principle impossible.
Cheng Yi's maxim—"Cultivation requires reverence; learning lies in the extension of knowledge"—precisely binds these two practices together. Only with an inner state of reverence—focused and concentrated, without impetuousness or distraction—can one avoid being confused by the surface of things and blinded by personal selfish biases in the process of investigating things and exploring principle. Without the spiritual foundation of reverence, even if one investigates things, one will be unable to concentrate, and may even be swayed by personal desires and subjective prejudices, making it impossible to truly exhaust the principle of things.
Zhu Xi further deepened this logical connection, proposing that "maintaining reverence is the foundation of probing principle to the utmost" (Daxue Zhangju). He compared reverence and the exploration of principle to the two feet of a person or the two wings of a bird: both are indispensable and mutually promotive. The entire process of investigating things must be anchored in reverence: when first contacting a thing, one should explore its essence with a solemn and focused attitude; in the course of exploration, one should restrain body and mind to prevent distracting thoughts from invading cognition; after the exploration, one must consolidate the cognitive gains with reverence, transforming external moral knowledge into inner conscious moral conviction. Without the spiritual foundation of reverence, even if one investigates things, one will be unable to concentrate, and may even be swayed by personal desires and subjective prejudices, making it impossible to truly exhaust the principle of things.
2.3 Accumulation and Penetration: The Cognitive Progression of Cultivating Virtue
For the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi, the process of investigating things and extending knowledge to cultivate virtue is not a transcendent moment of sudden enlightenment, but a gradual progression from the shallow to the deep, from the superficial to the profound—synchronized with the gradual growth of virtue from cognition to internalization.
Cheng Yi explicitly rejected the heterodox view that "investigating one single thing leads to simultaneous enlightenment of all principles," pointing out that "learners must investigate one thing today and another tomorrow. After accumulating practice over a long time, penetration will naturally come about" (Er Cheng Yishu). The principles of things are scattered in countless specific affairs, and it is impossible to comprehend all the principles of the world through a single act of investigation. Only through long term continuous accumulation and persistent exploration can one achieve an overall understanding of the Heavenly Principle. The so-called "penetration" does not mean the end of cognitive practice, but that the innate virtue in the heart has been fully awakened, enabling one to draw inferences from one instance and connect the cognitive gains from external things with the innate good nature of the heart.
Zhu Xi took up this theory of gradual accumulation and further systematized it: "When investigating things, one must pursue the principle to the utmost; when extending knowledge, one must carry cognition to the utmost" (Daxue Zhangju). "Pursuing the principle to the utmost" means that the exploration of the principles of things must not stop at superficial phenomena, but must reach the core moral essence; "carrying cognition to the utmost" means that the cognition of moral principles must be expanded to the greatest extent without any ambiguity. He believed that after long term accumulation of cognitive practice, one will eventually achieve the state of "sudden penetration and comprehensive understanding": on the one hand, one has a thorough grasp of the external principles of all things; on the other, one's inner moral substance is completely illuminated, without any obscuration from selfish desires.
This process of accumulation and penetration is itself a concrete stage of virtue cultivation. At the beginning of investigation, the learner is still in the stage of understanding external factual principles; as cultivation deepens to the stage of penetration, he realizes that the Heavenly Principle and human nature are originally interconnected—the principle of external things is ultimately rooted in the innate good nature of the human heart. The ultimate goal of investigating things is not to acquire instrumental external knowledge, but to confirm and expand the innate good nature of the heart through the cognition of things.
3. Sincerity of the Will and Rectification of the Mind: The Internal Implementation of Cultivating Virtue
After investigating things and extending knowledge to achieve a rational cognition of the Heavenly Principle, the focus of sagehood practice shifts from external cognitive exploration to inner moral nurture. This is the task of the third and fourth steps of The Great Learning: sincerity of the will and rectification of the mind. These two steps are the key links for landing virtue cultivation in the inner world, connecting external moral cognition with inner moral consciousness. Without this internal transformation, the Heavenly Principle obtained by investigating things remains empty knowledge unrelated to the self, and cannot be converted into real moral virtue.
3.1 Sincerity of the Will: The Genuine Implementation of Cultivating Virtue
Sincerity of the will is the key node connecting moral knowledge and moral practice. Zhu Xi defined this concept in his Commentary on the Great Learning: "Sincerity of the will means not deceiving oneself, just as one naturally hates a foul smell and naturally loves a beautiful countenance." It requires that inner moral intentions be true and without falsehood, neither deceiving others nor oneself; the love of good and hatred of evil must come from the heart, without any deliberate pretense.
Cheng Yi pointed out that the essence of sincerity of the will is to truly implement the Heavenly Principle obtained from investigating things and extending knowledge into inner moral intentions, achieving a complete unity of inner cognition and outer conduct (Er Cheng Yishu). If one knows that an act is good but does not genuinely want to practice it, or knows that an act is evil but does not genuinely want to avoid it—merely pretending to love good and hate evil on the surface—then one's will is insincere, and the moral principle obtained from investigating things remains empty, impractical knowledge. Sincerity of the will requires that the cognition of moral principles be transformed into genuine moral emotions and conscious intentions from the depths of the heart. This is the real landing of virtue cultivation.
The key to achieving sincerity of the will lies in the cultivation of reverence. The Cheng brothers proposed that "reverence is the way to ward off evil" (Er Cheng Yishu). "Warding off evil" means preventing biased and selfish desires from invading the inner mind. The human heart is easily swayed by selfish desires, giving rise to false and dishonest thoughts; only by upholding reverence at all times and keeping the mind focused on the Heavenly Principle can one fundamentally cut off the possibility of self-deception. Zhu Xi added that after investigating things and extending knowledge, one must settle the mind with reverence, keeping it clear and focused. Only in this way can the moral principle obtained from investigation take root in the heart, the intention becomes sincere, and virtue be truly internalized.
3.2 Rectification of the Mind: The Equilibrium of Moral Psychology
Sincerity of the will ensures the authenticity of moral intentions, while rectification of the mind refers to the state of inner equilibrium required for virtue to mature into a stable character. As The Great Learning states: "When the mind is swayed by anger, it cannot be upright; when it is swayed by fear, it cannot be upright; when it is swayed by fondness, it cannot be upright; when it is swayed by anxiety, it cannot be upright." Zhu Xi commented that these four emotions—anger, fear, fondness, and anxiety—are natural emotional responses of the human heart and are not inherently evil. However, without the spiritual foundation of reverence to guide and regulate them, these emotions will be indulged and will obscure the mastery of the Heavenly Principle over the inner mind. The mind then loses its balanced and upright state, and virtue cannot be stably cultivated.
The only way to achieve rectification of the mind is sustained cultivation through reverence. Cheng Yi said: "Reverence is simply abiding in oneness. Abiding in oneness means not leaning eastward or westward, thus dwelling in the mean" (Er Cheng Yishu). "Abiding in oneness" means that the mind is always focused on the Heavenly Principle, not swayed by external material desires, not biased by personal emotions, and thus naturally maintains an impartial and upright state. If one can uphold reverence in daily life, the mind will naturally conform to the Heavenly Principle when handling affairs, and excessive emotions will be naturally restrained. Without the foundation of reverence, even if one can suppress emotions by force temporarily, one cannot maintain inner balance for long, let alone form a stable moral character.
Zhu Xi further refined the internal connection between rectification of the mind and virtue cultivation. He proposed: "The mind is the master of the body, and virtue is the master of the mind" (Daxue Zhangju). Only by cultivating the mind with reverence can virtue always dominate the inner mind, preventing it from being swayed by emotions or obscured by selfish desires. This practice cannot be achieved overnight; it requires long-term daily introspection and abiding by reverence. When not engaging with external affairs, one should restrain body and mind, be vigilant against the germination of selfish desires, and keep the mind focused on the Heavenly Principle; when engaging with external affairs, one should weigh the relative importance, distinguish right from wrong, and prevent personal emotions from clouding moral judgment. Whether in action or in tranquility, one must always uphold reverence, allowing the Heavenly Principle to guide the inner mind. Only then can virtue be continuously nurtured and gradually transformed into a stable moral conviction that will not be easily shaken by external temptations or interference.
3.3 Vigilance in Solitude: The Daily Discipline of Cultivating Virtue
Sincerity of the will and rectification of the mind are essentially spontaneous inner practices that do not depend on external supervision. To ensure their continuity and authenticity, the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi took The Great Learning's doctrine of "vigilance in solitude" (shendu慎獨) as the specific daily discipline for cultivating virtue. In its discussion of sincerity of the will, The Great Learning emphasizes: "The noble person must be cautious when alone." Zhu Xi annotated: "The reason the noble person must be cautious when alone is that others cannot know one's inner thoughts—only one's own self is aware of them" (Daxue Zhangju大學章句). Even in an unsupervised private situation where no one else is watching, when a private thought germinates known only to oneself, one must still maintain awe and vigilance toward the Heavenly Principle, carefully treat every inner intention, and strictly restrain one's own conduct.
Vigilance in solitude is a critical lever for cultivating virtue and an important criterion for verifying its effectiveness. In public social situations, constrained by external public opinion and moral supervision, most people can deliberately restrain their behavior and maintain moral compliance; in unsupervised private situations, however, many relax their moral vigilance, indulge selfish desires, and even do things that violate moral norms. Genuine virtue is precisely nurtured in these trivial, unsupervised private moments. If one can practice vigilance in solitude—remaining vigilant and upholding reverence in private, proactively eliminating unwholesome thoughts and expanding nascent good intentions—virtue will gradually take root in the heart. Conversely, if one cannot practice vigilance in solitude, acting deceptively to conceal one's misdeeds from others, all previous efforts in investigating things and extending knowledge will be in vain, and true virtue cannot be cultivated at all.
Vigilance in solitude is also a deepening of the practice of reverence. Reverence pervades all moments of daily life, and vigilance in solitude is its concrete manifestation in unsupervised private situations. The Cheng brothers said: "Evil is warded off, and sincerity will naturally be preserved" (Er Cheng Yishu二程遺書). In private situations, if one can actively guard against the germination of selfish desires and consciously keep the mind focused on moral principles, then sincerity of the will and rectification of the mind can be truly implemented.
4. Cultivation of the Self: The Pivotal Link in the Practice of Cultivating Virtue
In the Eight Step framework, cultivation of the self serves as the core pivot connecting inner sagehood and outer kingship. The previous four steps—investigation of things, extension of knowledge, sincerity of the will, and rectification of the mind—lay an inner moral foundation for self-cultivation; the subsequent three steps—regulation of the family, governance of the state, and bringing of peace to the world—are its natural extension and external verification. Without the practical transformation of self-cultivation, all inner virtue cultivation remains empty spiritual talk and cannot be converted into the ability to govern others and conduct social affairs.
4.1 The Essence of Self-Cultivation: Nurturing Virtue and Transforming Physical Endowment
For the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi, cultivation of the self is not mere external behavioral regulation, but the continuous nurture of inner virtue and thorough transformation of one's physical endowment. Cheng Yi proposed: "Learnership is only meritorious when it transforms one's physical endowment" (Er Cheng Yishu, juan 18《二程遺書》卷十八). "Physical endowment" refers to the innate spiritual and emotional predisposition of a person, which is inherently neither good nor evil; if not guided by virtue and obscured by selfish desires, however, it leads to biased and immoral behavior. The real effect of self-cultivation lies not in the growth of knowledge or the compliance of superficial behavior, but in continuously rectifying this biased physical endowment through virtue cultivation, bringing it into conformity with the Heavenly Principle, and fully manifesting the innate good nature.
Zhu Xi took up this view and systematically expounded the logical relationship between virtue cultivation and physical endowment transformation. He believed that human nature is originally pure and good, but the physical endowment one is born with varies in clarity, turbidity, partiality, and uprightness. In postnatal life, if the physical endowment is influenced by external material desires and not guided by virtue cultivation, it will gradually obscure the innate good nature, leading to immoral behavior. The essence of self-cultivation is therefore to "dispel the obscuration of selfish desires and restore one's innate goodness" (Daxue Zhangju). On the one hand, it is necessary to overcome the bondage of selfish desires to the physical endowment and gradually reduce their influence; on the other, one must actively nurture and expand the innate good nature, making virtue the dominant force in daily behavior. The ultimate goal is a complete transformation of the physical endowment, so that every word and deed naturally conforms to the Heavenly Principle.
The Cheng brothers stressed that self-cultivation is not a one-sided rectification of external behavior, but a holistic inner-outer transformation centered on virtue cultivation. They said: "What is within will surely be manifested without" (Er Cheng Yishu二程遺書). If one's inner virtue is cultivated to a sufficient extent, it will naturally manifest in external behavior, without the need for deliberate external restraint. Zhu Xi quoted Cheng Yi's famous thesis in his commentary: "Reverence is used to rectify the inner self, and righteousness is used to square the outer self." Inner reverence cultivation straightens the mind, bringing it into conformity with the Heavenly Principle; the discipline of righteousness regulates external behavior, bringing it into conformity with moral norms. The essence of self-cultivation is to achieve simultaneous rectification of the inner mind and external conduct through the unity of reverence and righteousness.
4.2 Restraining the Self and Returning to Propriety: The Practical Method of Cultivating Virtue
In the specific practice of self-cultivation, the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi inherited Confucius' doctrine of "restraining the self and returning to propriety" (keji fuli克己復禮), regarding it as the core practical method for cultivating virtue and the critical path for transforming inner virtue into external daily conduct. "Restraining the self" means curbing one's selfish desires and deviant thoughts; "returning to propriety" means ensuring that one's words and deeds conform to the moral principles embodied in the Heavenly Principle. The Cheng brothers believed that the core of this practice is the cultivation of reverence: "Reverence overcomes all evils" (Jinsilu, juan 4《近思錄》卷四). If one can maintain a state of reverence in daily life, focusing on the Heavenly Principle, one can naturally overcome the interference of various selfish desires. The process of restraining the self is essentially the process of cultivating virtue: as selfish desires diminish by one degree, good virtue expands by one degree; the more thoroughly selfish desires are curbed, the deeper one's virtue cultivation becomes.
Zhu Xi further detailed the specific practical path.He stressed that this practice cannot be limited to major events or formal occasions, but must be implemented in every trivial detail of daily life: in the basic necessities of life, in the process of interacting with others, and in the handling of all manner of daily affairs, one must consciously restrain selfish desires and regulate behavior according to the requirements of propriety. The "propriety" referred to here is not rigid external institutional norms, but the concrete manifestation of the universal moral principle in social life. The core of returning to propriety is to make one's behavior conform to the moral norm of the Heavenly Principle. This practice requires adhering to the Confucian precepts: "Do not look at what is contrary to propriety, do not listen to what is contrary to propriety, do not speak what is contrary to propriety, and do not make a move that is contrary to propriety."
This daily restraint and training is essentially a continuous reinforcement of virtue cultivation. Through long term unremitting practice, external moral norms are gradually transformed into inner conscious moral conviction, and temporary moral consciousness is consolidated into a stable moral character. Eventually, one is able to act in accordance with moral norms without deliberate restraint or external supervision. This is the internal logic of The Great Learning's dictum that "the self being cultivated precedes the regulation of the family": only by completing the cultivation of one's own virtue can one further edify family members and govern society.
4.3 Self-Cultivation as the Foundation: The Value Logic of Cultivating Virtue
As The Great Learning states: "From the son of heaven down to the common people, all must take self-cultivation as the foundation." The Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi regarded this thesis as the core value logic of the entire sagehood system: regardless of sovereign or commoner, regardless of one's career or status, all must take self-cultivation as the fundamental prerequisite for all external social endeavors; and the essence of self-cultivation is precisely virtue cultivation. Cultivating virtue is thus the underlying foundation of all human endeavors and the fundamental foothold for achieving sagehood.
The Cheng brothers explained the core status of self-cultivation through the logical relationship between "root" and "branch": virtue is the root, and external social endeavors are the branches; only by establishing the root first—by cultivating and completing one's own virtue—can the outer kingship enterprise have a solid starting point. To attempt to edify others or govern the state without first cultivating the self and nurturing virtue is like expecting a fruitless tree to flourish with leaves and branches, or building a high-rise without a foundation—an impossibility. Cheng Yi used the metaphor of planting a tree: "The root must first be banked up with soil, then the tree can grow toward the sky" (Jinsilu, juan 2《近思錄》卷二). Learners must first cultivate their own virtue, then establish a correct life direction, and lay a solid foundation for subsequent endeavors in regulating the family, governing the state, and bringing peace to the world.
Zhu Xi drew a clear demarcation in his commentary: "The stages from investigating things up to self-cultivation pertain to the work of manifesting the luminous virtue; the stages from regulating the family onward pertain to the work of renewing the people" (Daxue Zhangju). The first five steps are the inner sagehood practices of "manifesting the luminous virtue," aiming to cultivate and manifest the innate good nature; the last three steps are the outer kingship practices of "renewing the people," aiming to influence and transform others through the extension of one's own virtue. Self-cultivation is the pivot connecting these two stages: without its practical transformation, inner virtue cannot be truly manifested, and the work of manifesting the luminous virtue becomes empty talk; without its foundation, virtue cannot be extended outward, and the work of renewing the people becomes a rootless tree.
5. Regulation of the Family: The Familial Extension of Cultivating Virtue
Regulation of the family is the first level of outward extension for cultivating virtue and the initial tangible link in the outer kingship enterprise. The family is the basic unit of society, the most important practical site for virtue cultivation, and the primary step in expanding personal virtue into social morality. The practice of outer kingship must start from the family: only by extending one's virtue to the family, achieving familial harmony and ethical education, can one gradually accumulate the ability to govern the state and bring peace to the world.
5.1 The Essence of Regulating the Family: Extending One's Virtue to Transform Family Members
The Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi defined regulating the family as the act of harmonizing family members and upholding family ethics through the transformative power of one's own virtue. Its essence is to extend the virtue cultivated through self-cultivation to edify family members, fostering their good character through subtle moral influence. The family is not merely a daily living community, but the smallest unit of moral education; the blood ties and natural affection among family members constitute the most spontaneous and convenient medium for the dissemination of morality.
Cheng Yi stated: "The foundation of regulating the family lies in rectifying one's own person" (Yichuan Yizhuan伊川易傳). Governing the family does not rely on strict family rules or harsh punishment, but on the moral example of the cultivator himself. Family members live in close quarters, and every word and deed of the family head is observed by all. If one's virtue is profound and one's conduct spontaneously aligns with morality, family members will naturally be influenced and voluntarily emulate such behavior. Conversely, if one's own virtue is deficient and one's conduct violates moral principles, yet one demands moral compliance from family members, no matter how eloquent the words, they will not inspire genuine conviction, and the family will inevitably fall into disorder.
Zhu Xi refined this logic in his commentary, positing that the core of regulating the family is "extending one's own virtue to transform family members" (Daxue Zhangju大學章句). The specific content of this extension is the three fundamental virtues of filial piety, fraternal respect, and parental kindness cultivated in self-cultivation: serving parents with filial piety to edify the younger generation; respecting elder brothers with fraternal respect to edify peers; nurturing children with parental kindness to edify all family members. These three virtues are the foundation of all human conduct and the core of family ethics. If fully promoted within the family, inspiring moral transformation in all members, the family will naturally achieve harmony and order, laying a solid foundation for further governance of the state.
5.2 The Isomorphism of Family and State: The Outward Extension Logic of Cultivating Virtue
The theoretical basis for connecting family regulation with state governance is the traditional Confucian idea of the isomorphism of family and state. This view holds that the family is a microcosm of the state, and the state is an enlarged family; the moral logic of family governance and state governance is completely consistent, and the ethical principles of family governance can be directly extended to the field of state governance.
Cheng Hao elaborated on this isomorphic relationship from the perspective of political governance. He proposed: "The way of governance takes according with the people's hearts as its root, enriching the people's livelihood as its root, and peace without disturbance as its root" (Dai Lü Hui Shu Ying Zhao Shu代呂晦叔應詔疏). This political logic actually originates from the ethical logic of family governance. The family ethic of "parental affection and filial piety" extends to the state: the ruler should love the people as parents love their children, and the people should be filial to the ruler as children are filial to their parents; the family ethic of "brotherly friendship and respect" extends to the state: officials should love the people as elder brothers love their younger brothers, and the people should respect officials as younger brothers respect their elder brothers. The fundamental moral norms of state governance are merely an extension of family ethics.
Zhu Xi explicated the isomorphism of family and state more thoroughly in his commentary. He believed that the core reason "the regulated family precedes the orderly state" is that the virtue exercised in family governance can be directly transferred and applied to state governance. The noble person need not leave his home to achieve moral transformation throughout the state—his conduct of filial piety, fraternal respect, and parental kindness within the family itself serves as a direct moral example for governance. The filial piety shown to parents can be directly transplanted into loyalty to the ruler; the fraternal respect shown to elder brothers can be transformed into respect for the elderly; the parental kindness shown to children can be converted into benevolent governance over the people. Anyone who cannot edify his family members with virtue or handle family relations properly must have serious deficiencies in virtue cultivation, making it impossible for him to extend virtue to the people of the state.
5.3 Moral Transformation of Family Members: Daily Edification in Cultivating Virtue
The key to regulating the family lies in the daily edification of family members, rather than formalistic family rules or coercive punishment. The core of this edification is the subtle, imperceptible influence of one's own virtue in daily family life. The Cheng brothers stressed that the key to edifying family members lies in setting an example and influencing others through practical deeds, rather than empty moral preaching. In his Commentary on the Book of Changes, Cheng Yi emphasized: "The way of regulating the family takes rectifying one's own person as the foundation" (Yichuan Yizhuan伊川易傳). If one's own conduct is upright and in line with moral principles, family members will follow suit without the need for explicit orders; conversely, if one's own conduct is improper, even the most severe family rules will not achieve the desired effect. The daily details of family life are the most important carrier of moral edification: treating parents with gentle words and thoughtful care, interacting with elder brothers with deference and sincerity, educating children with affectionate discipline and personal example—these trivial daily acts are the most effective way to edify family members. The practice of virtue within the family must be devoid of hypocrisy: if one merely feigns moral conduct on the surface while lacking genuine virtue within, family members will inevitably feel repelled, making moral transformation impossible.
Zhu Xi added that edifying family members through virtue is a gradual, long-term process that must be sustained in the daily routine of family life. It cannot be achieved through occasional good deeds or temporary deliberate restraint. In every detail of clothing, food, housing, transportation, social interaction, and family affair management, one must prioritize moral principles, infusing virtue into every aspect of daily life. Over time, family members are unconsciously influenced by what they see and hear, spontaneously emulating moral behavior. Moreover, the process of edifying family members is also a further test of one's own virtue cultivation: if one can overcome personal partiality and treat all family members with impartial moral standards, it indicates that one's virtue cultivation is sufficiently mature; conversely, if one shows favoritism to close relatives and is cold or rude to other family members, it reveals significant deficiencies in virtue cultivation, requiring continued diligent practice.
6. Governance of the State: The Political Extension of Cultivating Virtue
Governance of the state is the further extension of regulating the family in the outer kingship enterprise and the core link connecting personal virtue cultivation with public political governance. The essence of state governance lies not in coercive military might or institutional regulations to restrain the people, but in the moral influence of the ruler and officials to guide the people. Virtue cultivation is the fundamental prerequisite for state governance and the underlying guarantee for the country's long-term stability and security.
6.1 Governance Through Virtue: Cultivating Virtue as the Fundamental Foundation of State Governance
The Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi inherited the traditional Confucian political doctrine of governance through virtue, regarding virtue cultivation as the fundamental basis of state governance. The essence of politics is the extension of morality; the fundamental method of governance is not harsh punishment or political strategy, but the ruler setting a moral example for the people, inspiring them to spontaneously abide by moral norms, thereby achieving universal peace.
Cheng Hao stated: "Governing the world takes rectifying social customs and securing worthy talents as its foundation." The source of this foundation still lies in the virtue cultivation of the ruler: to foster pure social customs and ensure popular moral compliance, the ruler must first set a moral example; to acquire virtuous and talented individuals, the ruler must first possess virtue himself to attract and inspire worthy people. Cheng Yi clarified the direct connection between politics and morality: "Governance rests on cultivating oneself; if one's own conduct is upright, the officials will be orderly" (Er Cheng Cuiyan二程粹言). The fundamental principle of governing the state lies in rectifying one's own virtue. If the ruler's virtue is profound and his conduct aligns with morality, the people will naturally be influenced, and the state will be well-governed. Conversely, if the ruler's virtue is deficient and his conduct violates moral principles, yet he demands moral compliance from the people, even the enactment of harsh laws will not inspire genuine conviction, and the state will inevitably fall into chaos.
Zhu Xi articulated this logic more thoroughly in his commentary. He believed that the key to state governance lies in the ruler extending the virtue cultivated through self-cultivation to the entire nation, influencing the people with moral character rather than controlling them with power or laws. He said: "When one family practices benevolence, the entire state will rise in benevolence; when one family practices deference, the entire state will rise in deference; if one person is greedy and cruel, the entire state will fall into chaos" (Daxue Zhangju大學章句). The ruler's every word and deed has a demonstration effect on the entire country: if the ruler practices virtue within his family, the people of the state will be influenced to embrace benevolence; if the ruler is modest and courteous within his family, the people will follow suit and practice deference; conversely, if the ruler himself is greedy, cruel, and violates moral principles, the people will be negatively affected, and society will fall into turmoil.
6.2 Virtue as Primary, Punishment as Auxiliary: The Governance Approach Rooted in Cultivating Virtue
In the specific practice of state governance, the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi did not deny the deterrent role of law and punishment, but consistently adhered to the political principle of "virtue as primary, punishment as auxiliary"—taking moral edification as the main method of governance and punishment as a supplementary means. The underlying logic of this governance approach rests on the transformative power of virtue cultivation.
The core task of governance is "edifying the people and transforming their physical endowment" (Er Cheng Yishu二程遺書). The goal of governance is not to punish crimes, but to transform the people's physical endowment through moral education, cultivate their moral consciousness, and make them spontaneously abide by social norms. In this process, punishment can only play a passive deterrent role after crimes have been committed; it cannot solve the root problem of immoral behavior. Only through virtue cultivation can moral seeds be planted in the hearts of the people, inspiring them to inherently abhor evil and delight in doing good, thereby achieving the country's long-term stability and security.
Zhu Xi compared the relationship between virtue and punishment to that of roots and leaves: virtue is the root of governance, like the roots of a tree; punishment is the auxiliary, like the leaves. Only when the roots are firm can the leaves flourish; governing the state solely by punishment without virtue edification is like a rootless tree that cannot survive for long (Daxue Zhangju大學章句). He detailed the specific methods of virtue edification: the ruler must permeate all policies and daily conduct with the virtues of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and trustworthiness cultivated through self-cultivation; appoint and promote virtuous talented individuals to serve as officials and edify the people; establish ritual and musical institutions that accord with moral norms to subtly influence and transform the people. Through top down promotion of virtue, the people are gradually guided to understand moral ethics, cultivate virtue, and voluntarily renounce evil deeds. Punishment can only be a supplementary measure when moral edification fails; if the ruler does not prioritize the implementation of benevolent governance but relies on harsh punishment, even if social order is maintained in the short term, it cannot be sustained in the long run, let alone achieve true universal peace.
6.3 Protecting and Loving the People: The Political Value Orientation of Cultivating Virtue
In the political theories of the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi, cultivating virtue is not a personal spiritual pursuit of the ruler, or a formalistic political performance; it must be embodied in the political value orientation of protecting and loving the people and corresponding benevolent policies. This is the criterion for verifying the authenticity of the ruler's virtue cultivation in the political realm and the core value orientation of state governance.
The essence of Cheng Hao's doctrine of the "three foundations of governance"—"The way of governance takes according with the people's hearts as its root, enriching the people's livelihood as its root, and peace without disturbance as its root"—lies in translating the ruler's virtue into loving political measures. "According with the people's hearts" means respecting the people's true wishes and formulating policies based on public will rather than personal selfish desires; "enriching the people's livelihood" means guaranteeing the people's basic subsistence needs and ensuring their ample food and clothing; "peace without disturbance" means reducing excessive intrusion into the people's lives and enabling them to live and work in peace and contentment. These three foundations are the inevitable manifestation of the ruler's virtue in political practice: if the ruler's virtue cultivation is profound, he will naturally take public sentiment as the starting point of governance and the people's wellbeing as the core goal of policymaking. Conversely, if the ruler ignores the people's livelihood, prioritizes the satisfaction of personal selfish desires, or even exploits and oppresses the people, it reveals serious deficiencies in his virtue cultivation, disqualifying him from the ruling position.
Zhu Xi inherited this people-centered thought and pointed out in his commentary that the ruler's virtue cultivation must be embodied in "the way of the measuring square"—the spirit of reciprocity and empathy. He quoted The Great Learning: "What one dislikes in superiors, one should not use to treat subordinates; what one dislikes in subordinates, one should not use to treat superiors" (Daxue Zhangju大學章句). This requires the ruler to empathize with the people, treat the people's interests as his own, and not impose on the people what he himself does not desire. The way of the measuring square is the concrete manifestation of benevolent virtue in political practice: the ruler must extend his own desire for a good life to others, understand the people's true aspirations, protect their basic interests, implement benevolent governance, reduce excessive burdens, and enable the people to live and work in peace and contentment. Only by achieving this can the ruler's virtue cultivation be truly realized in the political realm, and can the state achieve genuine great order.
7. Bringing Peace to the World: The Ultimate Outer Kingship Domain of Cultivating Virtue
Bringing peace to the world is the ultimate outer kingship goal of the sagehood path. Although the concept of "bringing peace to the world" proposed by the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi is rooted in the traditional Chinese notion of "all under heaven," its governance logic of "manifesting the luminous virtue throughout the world" and public governance norms centered on virtue cultivation can be extended to the value criteria of modern global governance. In their theoretical system, cultivating virtue is the fundamental prerequisite for achieving world peace and the ultimate bond connecting inner sagehood and outer kingship.
7.1 The Essence of Bringing Peace to the World: Cultivating Virtue and Implementing the Kingly Way
The Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi defined bringing peace to the world as the ideal state in which all people under heaven manifest their innate good nature through virtue cultivation, each obtains his proper place in society, and all live in harmony without conflict or injustice. Its essence lies not in unifying the world through military force or imposing international order through formal institutions, but in the moral transformation of the entire human race: through the virtue edification of sages, all people in the world awaken their innate good nature and improve their virtue cultivation, thereby voluntarily abandoning aggression and oppression and realizing universal harmony.
The core pillar of this ideal state is the ultimate cultivation and promotion of the sage's virtue. In his Commentary on the Book of Changes, Cheng Yi stated that the sage "unites his virtue with that of heaven and earth, and matches his brilliance with that of the sun and moon" (Yichuan Yizhuan伊川易傳). When the sage's virtue reaches this pinnacle, he naturally acts in complete accordance with the moral law of the universe. When the sage governs the world with supreme virtue, the people will naturally turn to him—this is achieved not through military conquest or deterrence, but through the ultimate moral influence of the sage's perfected virtue. When the sage's virtue cultivation reaches its zenith, he naturally becomes the universal moral exemplar for all people under heaven, and world peace is thereby spontaneously achieved.
Zhu Xi supplemented the underlying logic: the key to bringing peace to the world lies in "manifesting the luminous virtue throughout the world" (Daxue Zhangju大學章句). This is a process of continuous outward extension of virtue: the ruler (sage) first manifests his own innate good nature through virtue cultivation, then extends this virtue to others through governance practice, enabling all people under heaven to likewise manifest their innate goodness and achieve moral self-improvement. When the ruler possesses perfected virtue and can fully extend this virtue to the people of the world—inspiring all people to cultivate stable moral character and spontaneously practice benevolence toward others—conflicts, wars, and injustice will naturally vanish, and the ultimate ideal of universal peace will be realized.
7.2 The Way of the Measuring Square: The Universal Promotion Rule of Cultivating Virtue
The core method to achieve world peace is the way of the measuring square elucidated in The Great Learning—the utmost extension of the principle of reciprocity and the concrete rule for promoting virtue cultivation globally. This rule transforms the abstract requirement of virtue cultivation into a concrete operational norm for international governance.
In his commentary, Zhu Xi explained: "The measuring square is used to measure what is right. It means empathizing with others and treating others as one would wish to be treated" (Daxue Zhangju大學章句). This is a universal moral principle applicable to all people: one should bestow upon others what one oneself desires, and refrain from imposing on others what one oneself detests. He further detailed its specific content: "What one dislikes in superiors, one should not use to treat subordinates; what one dislikes in subordinates, one should not use to treat superiors; what one dislikes in those ahead, one should not use to treat those behind; what one dislikes in those behind, one should not use to treat those ahead; what one dislikes in those to the right, one should not use to treat those to the left; what one dislikes in those to the left, one should not use to treat those to the right." In essence, this requires that in global governance, ruling subjects take the protection of the people's interests as the core starting point, treat the people of different nations and ethnic groups as equals, and not impose their own will on others.
The way of the measuring square is essentially the utmost extension of the reciprocity inherent in virtue cultivation. When one has cultivated virtue, one spontaneously possesses the consciousness of "empathizing with others"; extending this consciousness from one's family to one's state, and further from one's state to the entire world, will foster respect for the people of different nations and ethnic groups in global governance, empathy for the genuine aspirations of all people, rejection of power politics and hegemony, and equal treatment of all countries and regions. If all ruling figures worldwide abide by this virtue-based principle of reciprocity—prioritizing moral influence over military or economic coercion—the international community will naturally achieve fairness and justice, diverse nations and ethnic groups will coexist in harmony, genuine world peace will be realized, and the ultimate goal of bringing peace to the world will be achieved.
7.3 The Unity of Heaven and Humanity: The Ultimate Sagehood Realm of Cultivating Virtue
Bringing peace to the world is not merely a political enterprise or the external result of virtue cultivation; more importantly, it is the ultimate confirmation and consummation of the sage's personal virtue. The perfect unity of inner virtue cultivation and outer political practice constitutes the ultimate realm of the sagehood path—the unity of Heaven and humanity.
The underlying logic of this ultimate realm is the complete interconnection between the Heavenly Principle and human nature. Both Cheng Yi and Zhu Xi maintained that "human nature is principle" (Er Cheng Yishu二程遺書); human virtue is the concrete manifestation of the Heavenly Principle—the universal moral law of the universe—in the individual. The sage is defined by his perfected virtue cultivation: he has fully restored his innate good nature, completely eliminated the bondage of selfish desires, and brought every word and deed into conformity with the Heavenly Principle. At this realm, the sage does not need to deliberately abide by moral norms or consciously restrain his behavior; his every move naturally conforms to the moral law of the universe, achieving the state of "following his heart's desire without overstepping the bounds" (Lunyu論語).
The sage's perfected virtue will inevitably manifest externally as the ultimate enterprise of bringing peace to the world. The sage's virtue is imbued with a benevolent love for humanity and all things; he will necessarily extend this love to the entire world, inspiring all people and even all things to be influenced by his virtue. Guided by this virtue, the sage implements the way of the measuring square and benevolent governance, influencing the people of the world through moral conduct, inspiring them to awaken their innate good nature, and joining him in the ideal state of universal harmony. Conversely, the sage's virtue cultivation is thoroughly validated precisely by his completion of the ultimate enterprise of world peace—only by achieving this ultimate outer kingship enterprise can the sage's inner virtue cultivation be confirmed as truly perfect. The ultimate realm of sagehood is inherently an integral whole: the perfection of inner virtue cultivation will inevitably manifest externally as the ultimate enterprise of world peace, and the ultimate enterprise of world peace in turn fully consummates the sage's complete moral personality.
From a modern perspective, the Cheng brothers' and Zhu Xi's theory of bringing peace to the world can be extended to the value criteria for contemporary global governance: the requirement to cultivate virtue applies not only to individuals and nation states, but to all subjects of global governance. Ruling figures worldwide and the international community should abide by the way of the measuring square, taking the moral spirit of benevolence, equality, and reciprocity as the governance criterion, treat all countries and nations as equals, respect the independent choices of all states, resolve international conflicts through moral influence and negotiated cooperation, and promote the international community to achieve fairness, justice, and universal harmony.
8. Cultivating Virtue as the Thread Running Through the Entire Sagehood Path
The sagehood path constructed by the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi is a complete, rigorous ideological system with clear logical layers and strong practicality. In this system, cultivating virtue is the core connecting thread running through all links: it takes "learning to become a sage" as the ultimate goal, The Great Learning's Eight Steps as the gradual practice sequence, and the unity of "maintaining reverence" and "probing principle to the utmost" as the methodological core. This logical system takes the innate goodness of human nature as its starting point, the practice of "preserving the Heavenly Principle and suppressing human desires" as its main practical line, and the ultimate realm of "the unity of Heaven and humanity, inner sagehood and outer kingship" as its final spiritual pursuit. Without this guiding thread of virtue cultivation, the entire sagehood path and its political endeavors would lose their moral foundation, degenerating into empty formalities.
From the perspective of inner sagehood and self-cultivation, cultivating virtue is the fundamental core of personal spiritual advancement, interacting dynamically with the cognitive process of investigating things and extending knowledge. Investigating things and extending knowledge provide the necessary cognitive foundation: only by rationally exploring the moral principles contained in external things and truly clarifying the essence of universal morality can one accurately distinguish the boundary between the Heavenly Principle and human desires in daily life, making virtue cultivation targeted rather than blind. Virtue cultivation, in turn, is the prerequisite for the effectiveness of investigating things and extending knowledge: only by upholding reverence at all times, restraining body and mind, and eliminating the interference of selfish desires and subjective prejudices can one avoid being confused by the surface of things in exploring principles, thereby achieving a genuine thorough understanding of moral principles. Sincerity of the will and rectification of the mind serve as the internal consolidation and implementation: through the spontaneous discipline of vigilance in solitude, one transforms the external moral principle obtained from investigating things into genuine moral consciousness within the mind, sustains inner impartiality, and consolidates the innate root of virtue. Cultivation of the self constitutes the daily practical transformation: one converts inner moral consciousness into tangible moral conduct in daily life, gradually achieves the thorough transformation of physical endowment, and completes the forging of moral character in the inner sagehood stage.
From the perspective of outer kingship and governing others, cultivating virtue is the foundational basis of all outer kingship enterprises and the indispensable bridge connecting inner sagehood and outer kingship. Regulation of the family is the first level of outward extension: one edifies family members through the transformative power of virtue, achieves familial harmony via the ethics of filial piety, fraternal respect, and parental kindness, and accumulates the necessary social experience for governance practice. Governance of the state is the political extension: one directly transfers the virtue logic of family ethics to the moral criteria of state governance, implements benevolent governance through the ruler's moral example, inspires the people to abide by morality, and realizes the country's long-term stability and security. Bringing peace to the world is the ultimate outward manifestation and final validation: the sage extends his perfected virtue to the entire world, influences all people with the spirit of benevolence and reciprocity, and achieves universal harmony through the way of the measuring square, thus completing the ultimate outer kingship enterprise.
For the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi, the sage is not an unapproachable transcendent figure, but the natural result of virtue cultivation perfected to the highest degree. The entire Eight Step process is the gradual practice of virtue cultivation: from the cognitive exploration of moral principles, to the internalization of moral consciousness, to the transformation of daily conduct, to the extension of family ethics, to the practice of state governance, and finally to the realization of universal peace—virtue cultivation runs through every link and penetrates the entire process of sagehood practice. This ideological system not only dominated Chinese official thought for more than seven centuries after the Song dynasty, but also provides valuable intellectual resources for modern moral construction and global governance.
