"Gateway to the Virtue Realm of Sagehood " is a core proposition in the virtue ethics and the Confucian learning of sagehood developed by the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi, referring specifically to the fundamental gateway and practical method through which a learner can reach the moral realm of sages and worthies and cultivate virtue. In the doctrinal reconstruction and pedagogical innovation of Song–Ming Neo-Confucianism, the Cheng brothers first initiated the veneration of The Great Learning as the root for entering virtue, and Zhu Xi inherited this unique transmission from the Cheng school, integrated the Neo-Confucian system, and established The Great Learning as the head of the Four Books and the foremost classic for accomplishing sagehood and cultivating virtue. In contrast to the scattered principles and lofty realms found in the Analects, the Mencius, and the Doctrine of the Mean, The Great Learning alone builds a complete sequence of moral practice that proceeds from inner to outer, from stillness to activity, from substance to function, and from self-cultivation to ordering the world. Based on the original texts of the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi, taking "learning to become a sage" as the ultimate goal, and integrating the sequence of sagehood practice of investigating things and extending knowledge, making the will sincere and rectifying the mind, self-cultivation and regulating the family, and governing the state and bringing peace to the world, this article deeply analyses the fundamental theoretical reasons why the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi chose The Great Learning as the "Gateway to the Virtue Realm of Sagehood ," expounds its irreplaceable value within the Neo-Confucian system of moral cultivation, and responds to the core contemporary and theoretical demands of Song Confucians to reverse the empty and impractical scholarly ethos, reconstruct the practical character of Confucianism, and establish a paradigm of sagehood practice.

The Classical Foundation of the "Gateway to the Virtue Realm of Sagehood ": An In-depth Theoretical Study on the Cheng Brothers and Zhu Xi Taking The Great Learning as the Fundamental Basis for Moral Cultivation
I. Core Premise: The Essential Meaning of the "Gateway to the Virtue Realm of Sagehood " and the Goal of Sagehood from the Neo-Confucian Perspective
To clarify why The Great Learning became the Gateway to the Virtue Realm of Sagehood, one must first define the core meaning of "Gateway to the Virtue Realm of Sagehood " in the discourse of the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi. "Entering virtue" does not mean superficial moral conduct or doing good deeds, but rather the ultimate cultivation through which an ordinary person transforms into a sage, alters his physical nature, and returns to the original substance of Heavenly Principle. The "gate" is the correct entrance, the necessary path, and the standard of practice for the learning of sagehood, a gateway to orthodox Confucian moral cultivation distinguished from the empty stillness and false illusions, or the biased clinging to concrete forms and implements.
Zhu Xi devoted his entire life to comprehending the learning of the Cheng masters and finally condensed the core practice of entering virtue: "For self-cultivation one must use reverence; for advancing in learning, the key lies in extending knowledge," explicitly stating that no other words surpass these as the "Gateway to the Virtue Realm of Sagehood." At the same time, Zhu Xi profoundly reflected on the scholarly maladies of his time: Song scholars either drifted into the empty and tranquil learning of Buddhism and Daoism, engaging in empty talk of principles without real practice, or stagnated amidst concrete implements and utility, restricting themselves to the words and phrases of books without moral experience. Neither group obtained the correct path of moral cultivation in the Confucian school. The core appeal of the "Gateway to the Virtue Realm of Sagehood " is to solve the fundamental problems of learners not knowing the path of moral cultivation, practicing one aspect to the neglect of another, and severing the inner from the outer, thereby providing a complete system that is practicable, sequential, and allows for sustained advancement for "learning to become a sage."
In the Neo-Confucian system of attaining sagehood, the sage is not an unreachable realm but a personality goal that everyone can learn to achieve and can reach step by step. Its core sequence of practice runs throughout: starting with investigating things and extending knowledge to lay the cognitive foundation, proceeding to making the will sincere and rectifying the mind to consolidate the root of mind and nature, achieving self-perfection in virtue through self-cultivation, and realizing the externalization of virtue through regulating the family, governing the state, and bringing peace to the world, and finally completing the unity of individual virtue with Heaven, Earth, and Heavenly Principle. This complete logic of sagehood can be fully borne only by The Great Learning, which is also the fundamental premise for why the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi rejected other classics and uniquely honored The Great Learning as the foremost gateway for entering virtue.
II. Fundamental Theoretical Issue: The Core Reasons Why the Cheng Brothers and Zhu Xi Selected The Great Learning as the "Gateway to the Virtue Realm of Sagehood "
Surveying the entire Cheng–Zhu Neo-Confucian system, their honoring of The Great Learning and establishing it as the correct path for entering virtue in the Confucian school was not a matter of canonical preference, but was based on four core theoretical considerations: doctrinal completeness, sequentiality of practice, targeted correction of contemporary ills, and suitability for achieving sagehood. This represented a reconstruction of pre-Qin Confucianism and a Neo-Confucian systemic perfection, which can be deeply elucidated from four major dimensions.
(A) Complete Doctrinal System: The Only Classic That Integrates "Nourishment of Mind-and-Nature" and "Exhaustive Investigation of Principle to Advance Learning," Resolving the Dichotomy in the Practice of Entering Virtue
Zhu Xi clearly pointed out that the core of entering virtue lies in "abiding in reverence and extending knowledge, with the two aiding each other." Nourishing the self and abiding in reverence (the still practice of the unaroused state) and exhaustively investigating principle to extend knowledge (the active practice of the aroused state) are like the two wheels of a cart or the two wings of a bird – neither can be dispensed with. If one exclusively abides in reverence without investigating principle, one easily falls into the empty stillness of Buddhism and Daoism, guarding the nature with an empty mind and without doctrinal support. If one exclusively investigates principle without abiding in reverence, one easily stagnates among concrete implements and phrases, pursuing the branches and forgetting the root, without a moral master. Neglecting either is a grave illness in moral cultivation. A comprehensive survey of the Confucian classics reveals that only The Great Learning perfectly integrates the core practice of the Cheng–Zhu school, "rectifying the inner with reverence and regulating the outer with righteousness," achieving a dialectical unity of self-nourishment and the extension of knowledge.
The Great Learning constructs a complete system of moral cultivation through the "Eight Items": investigating things and extending knowledge correspond to the outward practice of "advancing learning and extending knowledge," requiring learners to probe the Heavenly Principle in all things, break through ignorance and obstinacy, and resolve the dilemma of "groping blindly in the dark" and learning without a gateway. Making the will sincere and rectifying the mind correspond to the inward practice of "nourishing the self and abiding in reverence," requiring learners to gather body and mind, concentrate on a single master, eliminate selfish desires, and realize the unity of stillness and activity in nourishing before arousal and examining after arousal. In Classified Conversations of Zhu Xi, Zhu Xi repeatedly emphasized: "Within preserving and nourishing, there is already the practice of investigating principle; within investigating principle, there is already the practice of preserving and nourishing." The core value of The Great Learning is precisely to solidify these two as an inseparable practice of sagehood, thoroughly resolving the one-sided scholarly tendencies of that time, which "valued the inner and slighted the outer, valued stillness and slighted activity, and valued self-nourishment and slighted the investigation of principle."
Compared with the scattered sayings of the Analects, the Mencius' emphasis on mind-and-nature doctrine, and the Doctrine of the Mean's stress on the realm of Heavenly Dao, The Great Learning does not idly talk about Heavenly Principle or mysteriously discuss mind-and-nature, but transforms the abstract "entering virtue" into a practicable, balanced, and non-partial dual cultivation system of reverence and knowledge. This is the primary doctrinal basis for the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi to establish it as the Gateway to the Virtue Realm of Sagehood . The Cheng brothers directly stated, "For the Gateway to the Virtue Realm of Sagehood , nothing compares to The Great Learning," precisely because it perfectly matches the essence of moral cultivation in the Confucian school: "inner and outer cultivation combined, knowledge and action united."
(B) Rigorous Sequence of Practice: Constructing a Gradual Ladder to Sagehood That Fits the Law of Self-Cultivation from the Ordinary to the Sage
"Learning to become a sage" is not a sudden enlightenment achieved in one leap, but a gradual, accumulating, and step-by-step practice process; this is a core understanding of Cheng–Zhu moral cultivation. Zhu Xi emphasized that advancing in virtue and cultivating one's vocation requires "daily renewal and unceasing vigor," opposing empty talk of the sage's aura and the delusion of attaining sagehood in a single bound. The core advantage of The Great Learning that distinguishes it from other classics is that it possesses a unique, interlocking, and rigorously ordered sequence of moral cultivation, offering learners a complete path to sagehood from entry to full accomplishment.
The Three Guiding Principles and Eight Items of The Great Learning construct a complete progressive chain for sagehood: it begins with investigating things and extending knowledge to break through cognitive delusions and clearly distinguish Heavenly Principle from human desires; then proceeds to making the will sincere and rectifying the mind to purify the original substance of mind-and-nature and establish a moral master; its root lies in self-cultivation, achieving personal moral completeness; and it extends outward to regulating the family, governing the state, and bringing peace to the world, completing the socialization and cosmic manifestation of virtue. This sequence perfectly matches Zhu Xi's core principle that "cultivating virtue is the root, while lecturing and learning is the function": investigating things, extending knowledge, and lecturing are the methods for advancing learning, while making the will sincere, rectifying the mind, and self-cultivation are the root of cultivating virtue. Root and branch are ordered, and weight and priority are distinguished, perfectly answering the educational concern of Confucius that "virtue is not cultivated, and learning is not expounded."
The Cheng brothers pointed out that the key reason why scholars of that time lost the Gateway to the Virtue Realm of Sagehood was the lack of sequence and steps: they either aimed too high and far, emptily discussing how to pacify the world, or confined themselves to trivial details and daily minutiae. The sequential system of The Great Learning realizes the cultivation logic of "rising from the lowly to the elevated, advancing from the near to the distant, and proceeding from the shallow to the deep." From the elementary learning of sprinkling and sweeping, responding to others, gathering the mind and nourishing the nature, to the great learning of exhaustively investigating principle, rectifying the mind, cultivating oneself and governing others, The Great Learning threads through all stages of a person's cultivation, giving beginning scholars a way to enter and advanced practitioners a method for profound study, eliminating the moral cultivation defects of overleaping and rushing ahead or hollowly seeking in emptiness. Zhu Xi highly affirmed this characteristic, believing that The Great Learning is the essential key for a scholar to establish himself and make progress; only by applying effort according to this sequence can one "have increasingly clear knowledge, increasingly firm hold, and old habits transformed day by day and month by month."
(C) Distinctive Function of Remedying Maladies: Reversing the Scholarly Ills of the Song Era and Reshaping the Practical, World-Engaging Moral Character of Confucianism
The Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi's veneration of The Great Learning had a strong contemporary relevance, its core aim being to rescue the perilous scholarly situation of Song Confucianism, which was declining and rife with heterodox views. Zhu Xi explicitly criticized two major maladies of the scholarly ethos of his time: "Those who speak loftily incline toward emptiness and quietism; those who speak humbly stagnate among concrete forms and implements." On one hand, Buddhist and Daoist doctrines were prevalent, and scholars indulged in the empty and tranquil sudden awakening, abandoning the practical work of human relations, daily affairs, self-cultivation, and ordering the world, and thus deviating from the foundation of Confucian world engagement. On the other hand, vulgar Confucians merely read the words and phrases of the classics, pursuing utility and gain, treating reading and investigating principle as a technical skill without aiming at moral cultivation and sagehood, putting the cart before the horse and leaving virtue barren.
In Zhu Xi's view, many classics were either too profound in doctrine for beginners to enter, or biased toward recording events with scattered principles, and thus could not remedy the scholarly ills of the age. Only The Great Learning, neither inclining toward emptiness nor stagnating in concrete forms, stands at "the precisely crucial, intimate, and reasonable point": it both stresses the investigation of principle and extension of knowledge, eradicating emptiness and falsehood, and firmly holds to making the will sincere and self-cultivation, breaking through the obscuration of utility and concrete forms; it attends to the inner sagely work of nourishing mind-and-nature and also to the outer kingly enterprise of ordering the world and putting learning into practice, perfectly counterbalancing the two major biases of contemporary Confucianism.
At the same time, aimed at the heterodox chaos of "using the semblance of Buddhism to confuse the reality of Confucius and Mencius" and "making reading and investigating principle a great prohibition," the Cheng brothers clearly declared: "The Great Learning is the transmitted word left by Confucius. If a scholar learns by following it, he will not lose his way at the Gateway to the Virtue Realm of Sagehood." From the Neo-Confucian viewpoint, The Great Learning is the orthodox, genuine transmission of Confucius and Mencius' sagely learning, the core standard for distinguishing heterodox Buddhism and Daoism and the inferior learning of vulgar Confucians. To take The Great Learning as the Gateway to the Virtue Realm of Sagehood is to establish the orthodoxy of the sagely learning, delimit the correct path of moral cultivation for all scholars under Heaven, and put an end to the confusion of heterodox doctrines and the growth of deviant falsehoods. This was an important contemporary and academic mission of the Cheng–Zhu school in choosing The Great Learning.
(D) Complete Scope of Sagehood: Integrating Inner Sage and Outer King, Realizing the Ultimate Unity of Individual Virtue and World Governance
The ultimate goal of Cheng–Zhu Neo-Confucianism is not individual self-cultivation for one's own perfection alone, but the sage's realm of inner sage and outer king, benefiting the world with virtue. Its moral cultivation system is always grounded in the core anchor of "learning to become a sage and simultaneously benefiting the world." The aura of the sage is by no means one of aloof seclusion and empty guarding of the mind-and-nature, but rather a complete personality that is vigorous and active, daily renewing without cease, and connects body and mind, family and state, and the entire world. The Great Learning is the only classic of pre-Qin Confucianism that completely connects "individual cultivation of mind-and-nature" with "governing family, state, and world," perfectly bearing the Cheng–Zhu ideal of sagehood.
From the perspective of the cultivation sequence, The Great Learning realizes a step-by-step unfolding from the cultivation of body and mind to the governance of the world: investigating things, extending knowledge, making the will sincere, rectifying the mind, and self-cultivation constitute the inner sagely practice, achieving the pure virtue of the individual and returning to the original nature of Heavenly Principle; regulating the family, governing the state, and bringing peace to the world constitute the outer kingly enterprise, extending individual virtue into human relations, society, state, and the world. This highly matches Zhu Xi's life ideal that "advancing in virtue and cultivating one's vocation is not only for one's own person, but also desires to accomplish something for the world." Zhu Xi stressed that advancing in virtue is daily renewal in the mind, and cultivating one's vocation is earnest practice in affairs; the learning of the sage must equally stress body and mind, cultivate both inner and outer, possessing both the stillness of nourishing the original mind and the activity of ordering the world and fulfilling duties.
In contrast, other classics like the Doctrine of the Mean, which is supremely brilliant yet practices the mean, lean toward ontological exposition of Heavenly Dao and human nature, lacking concrete sequential practice for ordering the world; the Analects and the Mencius contain mostly scattered sayings on self-cultivation and governance that do not form a systematic hierarchy. Only The Great Learning fuses individual moral cultivation with the governance of family, state, and the pacification of the world, making the learning of entering virtue no longer an isolated individual cultivation of mind-and-nature, but the great enterprise of sagehood that connects self, human relations, society, and the world. Even extending into the contemporary perspective of global governance, the logic of The Great Learning—"self-cultivation to benefiting the world"—still holds: beginning from the correctness of individual virtue and extending to the governance of community, state, and world is precisely the ultimate scope of the Confucian Way of the sage.
III. The Core Value of The Great Learning as the "Gateway to the Virtue Realm of Sagehood " and Its Foundational Significance for Neo-Confucianism
Based on the systematic exposition of the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi, The Great Learning transcends the textual value of an ordinary Confucian classic and becomes the general program for the learning of sagehood in Song–Ming Neo-Confucianism, the general paradigm for moral cultivation, and the general lever for the revival of Confucianism. Its core importance can be summarized in three points.
(A) Establishing the Correct Entrance to Sagely Learning, Ending the Scholarly Confusion of Having No Gate to Moral Cultivation
Before the Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi, Confucian moral cultivation lacked a unified and systematic paradigm of practice. Scholars either blindly followed Buddhism and Daoism, confined themselves to textual exegesis, or idly discussed principles, without ever grasping the essentials of the sagely learning. The Cheng brothers first advocated The Great Learning as the foremost gateway for entering virtue, and Zhu Xi further perfected its doctrine, refined its sequence, and solidified its status, establishing "investigating things and extending knowledge, making the will sincere and rectifying the mind, self-cultivation, and ordering the world" as the sole orthodox path of entering virtue. Henceforth, the Confucian "learning to become a sage" was no longer a vague moral vision but a real cultivation system with a gate to enter, a road to walk, and steps to climb, thoroughly ending the fragmented, utilitarian, and hollow predicament of Confucian moral cultivation since the Han and Tang dynasties.
(B) Unifying the Dual Practice of Reverence and Knowledge, Constructing the Core Neo-Confucian System of Moral Cultivation
The Great Learning fully bears the core practice of the Cheng–Zhu school: "For self-cultivation use reverence; for advancing in learning extend knowledge," achieving a perfect unity of nourishing before arousal and examining after arousal, of quietly guarding the original mind and actively investigating the principles of things, and of inner sagely self-cultivation and outer kingly ordering of the world. By explicating The Great Learning, Zhu Xi made clear that "reverence is the essential for preserving the mind, and knowledge is the effort for advancing learning," with the two aiding each other and advancing in a cyclical refinement. This gave moral cultivation both a root in the original source of mind-and-nature and support from cognitive doctrine, thoroughly avoiding the moral cultivation defects of leaning exclusively toward stillness, activity, inner, or outer, and thereby constructing the uniquely complete and well-rounded Neo-Confucian system of moral practice theory.
(C) Reshaping the Confucian Ideal of the Sage and Establishing the Inner Sage and Outer King as the Spiritual Core of Chinese Culture
The Great Learning actualizes the Confucian sage personality, in a sequential and systematic way, as a life paradigm of lifelong practice: beginners use it to cultivate themselves and establish character, advanced practitioners use it to advance in virtue and vocation, and those of great accomplishment use it to govern the state and bring peace to the world. Zhu Xi emphasized that the sage's aura is not an imaginary realm but the result of sincere step-by-step practice. When a scholar abandons empty experience, persistently engages in concrete self-cultivation, and applies effort according to the sequence of The Great Learning, he can rise from the lowly to the elevated and gradually enter the realm of the sage. This interpretation reshaped the core character of Confucianism as practical, vigorous, and engaged in the world, rooting the Confucian learning of sagehood in human relations and daily affairs and connecting it with affairs past and present, making it the core theoretical foundation of traditional Chinese moral education, character formation, and governance.
The Cheng brothers and Zhu Xi's choice of The Great Learning as the "Gateway to the Virtue Realm of Sagehood " was by no means a simple endorsement of a classical text, but a fundamental theoretical decision based on the Neo-Confucian goal of sagehood, the logic of practice, and the need to remedy the ills of the time. Compared with other classics, The Great Learning possesses five major qualities: doctrinal completeness and harmony, rigorous sequentiality, comprehensive practice, grand scope, and concrete efficacy in correcting maladies. It alone fully bears the core Neo-Confucian demand: "Self-nourishment and the extension of knowledge stimulate each other; inner sage and outer king are interconnected; body, mind, and world are united as one."
Taking The Great Learning as the gateway, learners can break through the confusion about moral cultivation, avoid one-sided scholarly tendencies, start from the cognitive beginning of investigating things and extending knowledge, pass through the mind-and-nature nourishment of making the will sincere and rectifying the mind and the self-perfection of self-cultivation and establishing virtue, and finally reach the sage's realm of regulating the family, governing the state, and bringing peace to the world. This system not only constructs the complete virtue ethics and moral education system of Song–Ming Neo-Confucianism, but also establishes the eternal spiritual core of Chinese Confucianism: "Learning to become a sage, and using virtue to benefit the world." It became the fundamental standard for generations of scholar-officials to cultivate virtue, establish themselves, and put their learning into practical use.
